SA: State govt and councils sign power deals

ADELAIDE, April 14 AAP - The South Australian government and the state's Local GovernmentAssociation (LGA) have combined to sign electricity contracts worth $70 million.

The contracts provide for Origin Energy and AGL to supply power to 4,000 governmentand council sites over the next three years.

They will save both levels of government money following big increases in the costof power after SA entered the national electricity market this year.

Administrative Services Minister Jay Weatherill said the state government and the LGAhad been working on securing the deal for the past 12 months.

"This is a standout example of how the state government and the councils can work togetherto do things differently," he said.

"With the state entering the national electricity market the outcome of these contractshas meant that additional funds will not need to be redirected from other essential services."
