NSW: Girl sucked to bottom of pool by cleaner
Backyard pool owners have been warned not to swim while using pool cleaners after a
12 year-old-girl was sucked to the bottom of a pool.
Sydney girl JULIE HADARIN had to be resuscitated after she became trapped on the pool floor.
The suction of the Pool Valet cleaning system was so strong that four adults who tried
to prise her free were unable to do so until the pump was turned off.
The New South Wales government has launched an inquiry into the pool cleaning system
used in the February incident.
But it hasn't yet recalled the Pool Valet.
Fair Trading Minister JOHN WATKINS says he's referring the product and similar products
to the Product Safety Committee for their advice.
Mr WATKINS says around 1,000 Pool Valet systems were put into backyard pools before
suppliers discontinued its use in 1996 because it was difficult to install.
