Park project runs into the rough: Residents concerned over proposal to develop land across street from Schenectady golf course.

Byline: Mike Goodwin

Jan. 9--SCHENECTADY -- As predictable as a duffer slicing his first drive of the year, any suggestion of private development at the Schenectady Municipal Golf Course or on surrounding parkland will trigger controversy.

A number of residents who live near the Oregon Avenue course are urging the City Council to reject a new plan for the Woodlawn neighborhood that would allow the development of housing on a six-acre tract of land across the street from the course that was most recently used as a garage for the Parks Department. Harold Wusterbarth of nearby Daniels Avenue said he opposes development of the land and warned that the city …

Nail-clipping on the bus can get under your skin

Well yes, it was a ridiculous argument, butit was OUR ridiculous argument.

My pal and I were locking horns on the issue of personalgrooming and grossness. To wit: if you got on the bus, took a seat, and then saw a pair of nail clippers left on the seat, would you begrossed out?

Her reaction was considerably more lenient than mine. I foundthe thought of sitting next to a casual clipper hideous. She, onthe other hand, kind of shrugged her shoulders and said, "Publicclipping's not so terrible. I mean it doesn't involve fluids.Granted, on toes it would be a problem, but really, it's just sodry."I found that amazing. So I set out to see how others felt. Tosee if I …

Hearts, drums beat for Old Glory; 3-ton, 22-foot motorbike, Uncle Sam on stilts are part of Troy's annual homage to the flag.(Capital Region)

Byline: COLIN McDONALD Staff Writer

TROY - Riding a 22-foot-long motorcycle is not the worst way to traverse the three-mile route of the Troy Flag Day Parade.

The 39th annual parade was the Troy debut for the 6,000-pound diesel motorcycle built and driven by Aaron Burbick, 70, of Hoosick.

"He does it for the crowds," said Joyce Glaspell, a friend of Burbick who rode in the back seat of the tricycle and had to yell over the rumble of the bike's engine, which Burbick took from a cement truck.

To answer the two questions repeatedly hollered from the crowd: The bike is a 671 Detroit diesel engine. And no, it can't do a wheelie.

Ballet superstar Rudolf Nureyev will make his debut as a stage actor Aug. 18 when a 20-week international tour of "The King and I" is launched in Syracuse.

Tour Director Arthur Storch, Syracuse Stage's producing artistic director, is holding auditions in New York City for a singer-actress to play Anna Leonowens in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Storch said he expects to meet with Nureyev for the first time today to discuss the role of the King of Siam, made famous by the late Yul Brynner.
